Alan David Miller - 1922-2021

Alan David Miller died on February 27, 2021, at the age of 99. A physician, musician, public servant, a lover of literature and the arts; he met life with passionate energy, incisive intelligence, idealism, and commitment.


With great sadness we write to inform you that Robert J. Campbell, M.D. passed away last Friday evening, May 22, 2020.

Dr. Campbell, an APA Distinguished Life Fellow since 1988, served as Past President of the New York County Psychiatric Society (1975-1976), Speaker of the APA Assembly (1978-1979), a member of the APA Task Force on Nomenclature and Statistics (1969-1975), and a member of the APA Board of Trustees for seven years (1983-1990). Dr. Campbell served as Medical Director of Gracie Square Hospital in New York City from 1977 to 2006 and as Director Emeritus from 2006 to 2013. He was also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Attending Psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Campbell published over 150 books, chapters, articles, and reviews, including the well-known Campbell's Psychiatric Dictionary, which he edited since 1956. Dr. Campbell was Editor-in-Chief of APA's Psychiatric News from 1983 to 1998 and Editor-in-Chief of the New York State Psychiatric Association newsletter, The Bulletin, from 1982 to 1997.

In addition to being the recipient of many national and international awards for his contributions to psychiatry, the arts, and international human rights, Dr. Campbell was instrumental in having homosexuality removed as a psychiatric disorder from the DSM II in 1973. In 1968, Dr. Campbell became involved with the Alcoholism Council of New York and joined the Board of the Council on Alcoholism in the 1970's, becoming the first physician elected as Chairman in 1988.

Dr. Campbell is survived by his loving and devoted spouse and life partner of 52 years, Cesare Santeramo, as well as by many friends, colleagues and loved ones.
